The Big Get Together

The article wrongly identified Martin Straker as the Southern and Wessex PRO. The C&C Magazine contacted our PRO Trevor Warren for a report on the events at Bradford on Avon he (Trevor) told them that he was in France and to contact Martin Straker who was one of the stewards on site for a report which he (Martin) gave them..  Martin did not indicate to them (C&C Mag) that he was Southern and Wessex’s PRO at any time ..

I hope this clears this matter up, we are greatful to Martin for putting in a report that reflects the Area in such a good light..

Some of you may have noticed that the website has been offline on several occasions over the last few months or perhaps even longer, this is due to problems with our service provider 123.Reg .. I have spoken to them several times and have received this email from them today.

Dear Ian,
This morning we suffered a technical outage that affected some of our customers’ services.
I would like to take a moment to apologise to each of you for any inconvenience this caused you and your businesses.
We are investigating this incident to make sure we understand exactly what went wrong and minimise any future risk of this happening again.
Over the past year we have been working to upgrade all of our hardware and redundancy systems to ensure that in events such as this, we are able to get your services up and running as quickly as possible. This, along with the hard work of our support teams, has meant that we have been able to restore your services with no loss of data or email.
We will be continuing to improve our systems to make sure you receive the best service possible from 123 Reg.

Kind regards,
Richard Winslow
123 Reg Brand Director

"Technical outage" .. that's geek talk for ...i will leave you you work that out..... and when they say "affected some of our customers’ services" they mean 99% ... and its offline at the moment I can't update anything.

A Camping and Caravanning Club member has been honoured with a Legion d'Honneur by the French government for his military service while liberating France during World War Two Aged just 98-years-old, Jim Pass, from Bradway in Sheffield, was awarded a Chevalier Légion d'honneur at Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington near York on Sunday November 13.

Mr Pass, who is also a lifelong caravanner and member of The Camping and Caravanning Club, was presented with his medal by the French Ambassador to the United Kingdom. He said: "In my 14 years as Chairman of the Club's Communications Committee I spent lots of time recruiting new club members at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre.
"I have so many great memories of my time with the Club." On average, just ten British nationals receive the medal each year. The Légion d'honneur is the most esteemed order for servicemen and women who fought to protect France in times of war.

Speaking about his wartime exploits, his wife Rita who attended the ceremony with Jim, said: "I feel very proud that Jim has been recognised in this way. He served over seven years during and shortly after the war. "On D-Day he was on Sword Beach unloading ammunition. I'm proud his actions have been recognised."
Awarded by the French Government, the latest medals have been presented in recognition of those who helped to win France's liberation from the Nazis during the course of the Second World War.

Upon returning home, Jim took up more leisurely pursuits and became an active member of The Camping and Caravanning Club. Jim sat on the Club's National Council - effectively its board of governors - plus various committees and has enjoyed decades of happy caravanning. Well known within the Club for his spirit of adventure, in 1988 Jim camped for the first time in a tent and completed his Camping Club Youth Test - at the age of 70. Jim continued to go caravanning, along with wife Rita, until just three years ago. He remains the Vice President of the British Caravanners Club, the latest in a long line of titles held by the former soldier.

The Camping and Caravanning Club have announced the appointment of Mel Hill as their new Chairman. Mr Hill, from Mexborough, South Yorkshire, was appointed by the Club's National Council during its November 2016 meeting at the Club's Coventry headquarters.
Mr Hill, a retired Construction Manager, has a long and rich history with the Club. After a short time away from camping and caravanning, he re-joined the Club in 1987. Since starting off as a tent camper at school, he moved on to frame tents, trailer tents and caravans - he now owns a Lunar.
Robert Louden MBE, the Club's Director General, said: "Mel has camping and caravanning in his blood, and is a great ambassador for the Club."He continues to be active within his local District Association and has held many important positions as a member of the National Council over the years. Most recently, he was the Club's Vice Chairman between 2014 and 2016, before being elected Chairman in November - a fitting recognition of his hard work and commitment."
Mr Hill continues to use his touring caravan most weekends, both when fulfilling duties as Chairman and enjoying local Club unit camping meets and events.
He said: "The touring industry continues to grow and more and more young families are joining us and getting into camping. The types of units available are changing to meet the needs of modern campers too, and manufacturers are developing new ranges and adopting new technologies to make camping more accessible and exciting."
Along with the Chairman's appointment, the National Council also elected Phil Henson as the new Club Vice-Chairman to work alongside Mel. Anne Dearling, who held the post of Club Chairman for the previous two years, now becomes Immediate Past Chairman.
The Camping and Caravanning Club is 115-years-old and appointed TV presenter Julia Bradbury as its Club President in 2013 - the first female to be bestowed with the title in history. The Club works with Julia, as well as explorer and Club Vice President Bear Grylls, and naturalist Chris Packham, to highlight the benefits of getting outdoors with camping.
The Club recently celebrated recording its highest ever membership of more than 293,000 households. To learn more about the Club, visit: Here
